Walkers Demo: free download and what's inside
Walkers Demo is a free, standalone Steam build of the survival game, live since October 19, 2026 and Windows-only. It is the only way to play Walkers before the retail launch on October 30, 2026. This page covers the download, the confirmed demo facts, what the build lets you practise — and the parts Steam has not published at all.
The download link goes to the demo's own Steam store page (app 5368490). The steam:// button opens the Steam client directly — if nothing happens, install Steam first.
How to download and install the Walkers demo
The demo is a separate Steam app from the full game, so you install it on its own — you do not need to own or pre-order Walkers.
- Open the demo's store page: store.steampowered.com/app/5368490. It is listed as Walkers Demo and links back to the full game (app 4779470).
- Press the download button on that page, or use the direct client link steam://install/5368490 if the button only opens the Steam client.
- Install and launch from your library. The demo appears in your Steam library as its own entry, next to — not inside — Walkers.
- No Steam page open? Search "Walkers Demo" in the Steam store search, or reach it from the download button on the full game page, store.steampowered.com/app/4779470/Walkers.
Windows only. Steam marks Windows as supported and Mac and Linux as unsupported for the demo, exactly like the full game. There is no console or Mac demo.
Download size and install size for the demo are not published by Steam, so treat any number you see elsewhere as unconfirmed.

What the demo lets you practise
Steam publishes no description for the demo, so nobody can quote an official feature list or a length estimate. What we can describe is the current demo build as the developer's own Steam announcements (devlogs #2–#11, October 20–25, 2026) describe it. Treat all of this as demo-build behaviour that may change before launch.
Death and respawn
Dying shows "YOU ARE DEAD" with a 3-2-1 countdown, then respawns you beside your marked bed, sleeping bag or tent — or at your bonfire if nothing is marked. Respawn restores full health and tops hunger and thirst up to at least half.
The belongings sack
Your hotbar, inventory and equipped backpack (contents included) drop as a Belongings Sack where you died, marked on the world map and minimap. Worn armour stays on you, and several sacks can be recovered later.
Thirst and the thermos
You can drink straight from lakes and rivers, and a craftable Thermos holds three uses and refills at water. Thirst was tuned to drain more slowly in devlog #9 — useful if you want to learn the survival loop before launch.
Survivors and outposts
Three survivor tiers (Weak, Average, Strong), a Reputation value that gates recruitment, and a Loot Orders panel for telling NPCs what to gather. NPCs eat, drink, heal, restock from chests and scale with tier and level.
Crafting and status effects
Bleeding, infection and food poisoning with their own cures, healing items that work over time, health-bar tinting, and crafting stations that keep running — four times slower — when nobody is assigned.
Combat, vehicles and saves
Unarmed left-click punches with stamina cost, a Buggy and a Sedan with fuel, gears and durability, and a save system with autosave, save-on-exit and manual slots.
For the full walkthrough of these systems in order, read the Walkers beginner guide — it covers respawn points, status effects, recruiting, base building and the ten mistakes that end early runs.
What the demo does not tell you
Three questions come up constantly, and none of them has a published answer:
- How long is the demo, and how much of the map does it cover? TBA — Steam has no demo description, so scope, length and map size are unconfirmed.
- Do demo saves or progress carry into the retail game? TBA — no source states that demo progress transfers, so plan on starting fresh on October 30.
- Will the demo stay available after launch? TBA — no announcement either way.
Careful with "free download" claims elsewhere. The only legitimate source is the demo's Steam page (app 5368490). There is no standalone installer, no third-party mirror and no paid "demo unlock" — Walkers itself is wishlist-only with no price announced.
Will the demo run on your PC?
The demo publishes no system requirements, so the closest published figure is the full game's: Windows 10 64-bit, Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600, 8 GB RAM, GTX 960 4GB or RX 570 4GB, DirectX 11 and 8 GB of disk space at minimum, with a GTX 1070 class card and 16 GB RAM recommended.
Use those figures as a sanity check only — they are the full game's numbers, and the demo's own requirements are TBA, so nobody can say whether the demo runs on weaker hardware. Full breakdown, including Steam Deck status and controller support: Walkers system requirements.
After the demo: get ready for launch
The demo is not the full game. Walkers launches on October 30, 2026, expected to unlock at 15:00 UTC, and the store page currently offers only a wishlist button — no price, no pre-order. If you have played the demo and want the retail build on day one, wishlisting is the only action available today.
- Release date and unlock times by region — countdown, the 15:00 UTC unlock and what "coming soon" means right now.
- Beginner guide — the first hours, death and respawn, thirst, survivors and base building.
- System requirements — minimum and recommended specs, Steam Deck status and languages.
- FAQ — price, Early Access status, co-op, permadeath and everything still unconfirmed.
Unofficial fan site. Walkers Wiki is not affiliated with Punch Interactive or Valve. The demo is a live pre-release build: devlogs #2–#11 changed respawn, thirst and the interact key within a single week, so demo behaviour and build numbers may keep changing until the October 30, 2026 launch. Anything not published by Steam or the developer is marked TBA here rather than guessed.
